You have “to be” a lot of things in business. Here is what I think are the Top 10 things to be or aspire to be.
These are the things that I hope I am, as the proud owner of The Shoe Garden. Perhaps not always, because no one is perfect, but I like to think most of the time.
While these qualities aren’t in any order, I think it’s important to highlight, celebrate and acknowledge kindness first. It often isn’t valued in business, when it should be.
If you’re same-same to everyone else, you get lost in the blur. But do/be/stand for something different, and people notice. And it’s fun to surprise!
Your ears and eyes must always be open to any opportunity or learning. Sometimes you don’t want to hear it/see it … but too bad. There’s never time to slack off and stick your head in the sand.
It’s a tough gig to own your own small business. Sometimes I can’t breathe for worry. Most of the time, I can’t stop smiling for happiness. Thank goodness “most” trumps “sometimes”!
Learn. Every. Single. Day. Read books, read newspapers, read blogs, listen to podcasts, talk to people. Be inspired and you’ll be inspiring.
Something not working … even something you were 100% convinced would … well, change it and change it fast. Follow your customer if they’re not following you and it will work out.
Don’t be afraid to show how much you care.
Shout if from the rooftops … how proud you are, how different you are. Again and again.
The moment you get cocky is the same moment you’re at risk of losing it all. There’s never any excuse for being a tosser!
This is the best bit about being in business. You can finally be you!
Until next time
