Ahhh, I love September school holidays!
I enjoy it so much when teenage girls, along with their mums and sometimes sisters and aunties, too, visit The Shoe Garden to find the perfect shoes for their school formal.
Often, they will bring their gowns in, change into them and be transformed into beautiful young women, sometimes proud, sometimes a little shy and awkward. Some strut confidently in their new heels; others are like a baby gazelle learning to walk!
But when they twirl in front of the mirror in their new heels, looking glamorous and happy, it makes my heart sing.
If other customers are in the shop at the same time, they will often reflect on their own school formals “in the bad ol days” when choices were hideous and limited.
I remember my own clearly. I had what I thought was the most beautiful dress in the world (in hindsight, not so much!). I adored it though and then I had to wear these boring, plain, white court shoes with a little stumpy heel that made me feel decidedly unglamorous.Having size 12 feet in the early 1980s wasn’t easy.
These days, school formals happen throughout the year and so I always try and have a wide selection of glam shoes available. Like all my customers, some girls prefer flats and very low heels, while others want the highest heels possible.
My job these days is to find what they want and ensure that shopping for shoes isn’t as traumatic as it once was.
Until next time
