I love smart shoes!
As I’m now ordering my Winter 2019 range and, indeed, some of my Summer 2019 range, evaluating shoes beyond their aesthetics has been on my mind this week.
I really appreciate shoes that have been cleverly designed.
FRANKiE4 are the leaders in the field of smart shoes. This brand is designed by a podiatrist and a physiotherapist, the wonderful Caroline McCulloch, and she understands what it takes to ensure feet are happy.
Not only are her shoes crammed with support and cushioning in all the right places, she also provides fillers in her closed-in shoes that change the width from narrow to average to wide.
There’s also the option to take out the filler entirely and put an orthotic in for those who need them.
The latest shoes to arrive at The Shoe Garden by Django and Juliette are also clever.
These flats all have a gentle elastic around their edges, making them fabulous for a variety of widths. I’ve seen them on women with very narrow right through to very wide feet and they look great as they snuggly hug the foot. I hate it when shoes gape and widen after use; these won’t.
Rollies are another example of a smart shoe in that they’re as light as a feather (almost true, they apparently weigh less than two bananas!) and are therefore ideal for travelling and wearing all day.
They feature clever designs like breathable lining and a third generation energy returning EVA outsole.
And again, everyone is copying their look.
Another brand that “gets it” is Naturalizer. Their shoes have always been comfortable, but what they have started doing in recent years has been to diversify their range to include glam shoes. And sure, lots of people do glam shoes but they don’t incorporate the wonderful cushioning that Naturalizer does. No more walking home barefoot after a night out!
The great thing for all these smart designers is that while looks can be copied, the care, attention, innovation and depth of research and wisdom that goes into making a shoe smart is far harder to copy.
As I slowly finalise my range, I am ensuring I include as many “smart shoes” that I can from the smartest designers around.
Until next time
