Seven years ago this Sunday, I opened the door to The Shoe Garden for the first time and held my breath…
- Was anyone going to come?
- Was I crazy for leaving a successful 23-year career in journalism, PR and fundraising?
- Would the fact that I had no experience in business, retail or shoes have an impact?
- Could I do this?
Thankfully, happily, luckily … I now have the answers.
YES, they came and they continue to! Indeed, many of the women who visited The Shoe Garden on that weekend still shop with me today. Two even work for me!
NO, I wasn’t crazy for leaving my career behind me. I was tired, I was burnt out, I was unhappy … now I’m still tired sometimes as a small business owner, but I’m mostly energised and very, very happy!
YES, having no experience had an impact, but in a good way! I wasn’t trapped in a box of expectations; I didn’t know the norms and therefore I could do things my way and, it turns out, my way works well!
And YES, I could do this! I continue to open the front door of The Shoe Garden every day, look around my beautiful shop, smile and look forward to the day ahead.
Until next time
