When I met another small business woman, Dorothy, in regional Malawi in December 2014 and asked her how the support of small loans from MicroLoan Foundation Australia have changed her life, this was her powerful and eloquent response.
“I used to beg my husband for money … now he comes to me.”
I shared this quote during a speech to a group of women last weekend and I always love the reaction; it never fails.
They clap their hands.
Fist pump the air.
Laugh in delight.
Because women get it.
They know that if you help other women, you’re helping the whole community. They know that women are too frequently marginalised because of their gender. They know that given a fair go, these smart, savvy women – despite poverty and illiteracy — can achieve so much.
That’s why I’m so proud to support MicroLoan Foundation Australia with a donation every time I sell a pair of shoes in-store or online.
I recently cracked the $27,000 mark; just under $20k from myself and the balance from fabulous customers, peers, suppliers and community groups donating or organising fundraising events through my Shop Share Care program.
One of my favourite quotes is “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” And if we do it together, it can change lives!
Until next time
