I went to a business breakfast this week and one of the speakers spoke with passion about how we all write our own story.
What a beautiful way of looking at your life.
Firstly, it correctly suggests that you are in charge. We are each the author of our own life. Everything we do and say is left behind as part of our legacy, like words on a page.
I’ve always believed that good stuff doesn’t just happen; you have to encourage it to happen by being open and brave and curious. That way you can truly say you are your own author and make your life as adventurous and exciting as you want.
When I opened The Shoe Garden nearly six years ago, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.
With no experience in business, retail or in shoes, I was learning on the go at breakneck speed.
But I was open-minded and asked lots of questions. I was a brave, although I see that more in hindsight as I didn’t feel particularly brave at the time. And I have always been curious, wanting to understand how and why things happen.
We can’t control everything, of course, but we can control our reactions to whatever it is that life may throw at us, especially those curve balls.
Yep, those curve balls can sometimes hit us in the face. I have felt their “splat” a few times recently!
The funny thing is that I did actually write my own story in my book, In My Shoes: What it’s really like to start your own business. It shares my journey over the first four years of running my business and all the highs and lows.
But every day before and since, like everyone else, I’ve been writing more and more pages and chapters.
A new chapter will start soon at The Shoe Garden when I step it up to the next level, buying more shoes across more months than ever before.
I am super excited and my pen is ready … what’s going to happen next?
Until next time
