Phew … it has been quite a week.
It started with The Shoe Garden staff Chrissy party. I’m so fond of this annual celebration, probably more than most as I didn’t get to celebrate the festive season at work for the first few years as I had no staff.
I never thought one of the things I’d miss from my old life was the work Christmas party!
Not anymore anyway. I’m incredibly fortunate to have amazing, amazing staff; women who care and are empathetic and hard working. Two worked for me in my other life (Sam and Megan) and Victoria is the daughter of a beautiful customer who visited on the second day I was open.
For a few hours last Sunday, it was lovely to chat and relax, drink a few Margaritas and listen to each other’s stories.
On that same day, actually, Today Show newsreader and journalist Sylvia Jeffreys wrote a passionate letter addressed to the shoe industry demanding to know why it’s so hard to find longer shoes.
I was tagged by a lovely customer on Instagram early on when a few hundred people had liked her post. And then I watched in amazement (although I wasn’t really surprised) as more than 4,700 liked the post in coming days and shared their thoughts. The same happened on Facebook.
Her followers lamented the same things I hear every day … the lack of fashionable choices; the scarcity of the longer sizes in regular shoe shops; the judgement from others about the length of their feet; and the tendency for grandma-like shoes or shoes that are expensive as the only choices in longer sizes.
She struck a chord and I was super proud that so many of my customers recommended me.
And then fast forward a few days to yesterday when I accidentally started my “Goodbye to Spring” sale.
Yes, it is indeed possible to accidentally start a sale as I have proved!
I had decided the day before to reduce my early Spring stock and uploaded the spreadsheet with the new prices and start and end date of the sale.
Apparently my website is in a different time zone to me, so I did gasp out loud when I saw that my website was already reflecting the discounted prices a day early.
So I decided the only thing to do was roll with it and quickly (and I do mean, quickly!) created my enewsletter to send to my gorgeous customers, plus promoted the “new” sale on social media.
As the week comes to a close, I predict a big lie-in or nap somewhere in my not too distant future.
Until next week
